Rethinking vacancy within the urbanization process: towards a new research agenda

چکیده
Vacant land and property have periodically been the focus of urban research but remain undertheorized. However, a recent resurgence scholarly interest has reinvigorated topic offers an opportune moment to critically advance theorization. The paper positions vacant – normatively characterized as “surplus”, “waste”, or “empty” space active, lively, contested within urbanization political processes. It proceeds in three parts. First, it shows how historically constituted lacuna research, variously conceptualized passive active outside urbanization. Second, summarizes work on, intersecting with, vacancy begun fill these conceptual empirical gaps. Finally, concludes with heuristic producing vacancy, maintaining removing outline agenda that central analysis urbanization, politics, governance.
